The Murph workout honors Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan, and has become a symbol of resilience and remembrance in the CrossFit community.
Origins of the Murph Workout

The Murph workout is a CrossFit Hero workout named after Lt. Michael Murphy, who was killed in action on June 28, 2005, during a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan. Murphy was a dedicated Navy SEAL known for his bravery and leadership. He created this workout, originally called “Body Armor,” to maintain his fitness while serving in the military. The workout consists of a one-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and concludes with another mile run. For an added challenge, many participants wear a 20-pound weighted vest.

The Heroic Actions of Lt. Michael Murphy
During Operation Red Wings, Murphy and his team were ambushed by Taliban forces while conducting reconnaissance. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Murphy displayed extraordinary courage. To save his team, he moved into the open to establish communication with American forces, risking his life to call for help. He was shot multiple times but completed the call before continuing to fight. Tragically, Murphy and two of his teammates were killed in the ambush, but his actions saved the life of teammate Marcus Luttrell, who later recounted the harrowing events.

Memorial Day Tradition
The Murph workout has become a Memorial Day tradition in the CrossFit community, where thousands of athletes participate to honor Murphy and all fallen service members. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces and promotes camaraderie and resilience among participants. The workout was officially introduced as a Hero WOD by CrossFit in 2005, and since then, it has grown into a global event, with CrossFit gyms around the world programming it each year on Memorial Day.

The Murph workout is more than just a physical challenge; it embodies the spirit of sacrifice, honor, and community. By participating in this workout, individuals pay tribute to Lt. Michael Murphy and all who have served, reflecting on the values of courage and perseverance that he exemplified.
